Mantha Zarmakoupi

Mantha Zarmakoupi is the Morris Russell και η Josephine Chidsey Williams Assistant Professor in Roman Architecture in the Department of the History of Art at the University of Pennsylvania. She has published widely on Roman luxury architecture and art, including the monographs Shaping Roman Landscape: Ecocritical Approaches to Architecture and Wall Painting in Early Imperial Italy (Getty Publications 2023) and Designing for Luxury on the Bay of Naples (c. 100 BCE – 79 CE): Villas and Landscapes (Oxford University Press 2014), as well as on the architecture, harbor infrastructure and urban development of late Hellenistic Delos. She has edited the book The Villa of the Papyri at Herculaneum: Archaeology, Reception, and Digital Reconstruction (De Gruyter 2010), the special issue on Ancient Architecture in the journal Αρχαιολογία & Τέχνες 141 (2023) and is currently preparing three more edited volumes on the architecture of Hermogenes (Hermogenes and Hellenistic-Roman Temple Building), on Constantinos Doxiadis and the Delos Symposia (Doxiadis and the Delos Symposia, 1963-75: History and Legacy) and on architectural and archaeological approaches to the study of ancient cities  (Looking at the City: Architectural and Archaeological Perspectives). She also co-directs two archaeological fieldwork projects in Greece (Delos, 2014-; Levitha, 2019-) and one in Turkey (Teos, 2022-).
